Short-term online loans fund equipment repairs and downtime fast, but daily or weekly remittance and factor-rate pricing often push APR-equivalents into triple digits.

What This Instrument Is

Short-term online working capital loans are fixed-amount loans, typically $5,000 to $500,000, repaid over 3 to 18 months through daily or weekly automated debits from a business bank account. They are originated by fintech lenders such as OnDeck, Fora Financial, and similar online platforms, often with same-day to 48-hour funding decisions based primarily on bank statement cash flow rather than collateral or a full credit package.

For equipment-heavy operations, this product typically shows up in three situations. A machine breaks down and the repair or rental replacement cannot wait for a bank term loan. A shop needs to bridge the gap between placing a purchase order for equipment and the arrival of a financing draw or SBA disbursement. Or a contractor wins a job that requires upfront rental, fuel, or parts spend before the client pays on terms.

How Pricing Works

Most of these products are priced with a factor rate rather than an interest rate. A factor rate of 1.25 on a $50,000 advance means the business repays $62,500 total, regardless of how quickly the balance is paid down. This structure is fundamentally different from an amortizing loan, and it is where the true cost is easy to underestimate.

To compare fairly, the factor rate has to be converted into an APR-equivalent that accounts for the actual repayment period and remittance frequency.

A Worked Example

  • Advance amount: $50,000
  • Factor rate: 1.25 (total repayment $62,500)
  • Term: 6 months (26 weeks)
  • Repayment: daily debits, 5 days a week

The fixed cost of $12,500 is charged regardless of term length, but a 6-month term compresses that cost into roughly 130 payment days. Using a standard APR conversion for daily amortizing repayment, this structure typically works out to an APR-equivalent in the 45 percent to 65 percent range. Shorten the term to 4 months and keep the same factor rate, and the APR-equivalent climbs into the 70 percent to 90 percent range, because the same dollar cost is paid back faster relative to the average outstanding balance.

This is the core mechanic to understand: shorter terms and more frequent remittance schedules raise the effective APR even when the factor rate looks identical on paper. A 1.25 factor rate on a 12-month term is meaningfully cheaper on an APR basis than the same 1.25 factor rate on a 4-month term.

Daily Versus Weekly Debits

Daily remittance pulls a small amount from the bank account every business day, which smooths cash flow impact per transaction but reduces the average daily balance faster, effectively front-loading the cost curve. Weekly remittance schedules stretch the same total payments over fewer, larger debits. All else equal, weekly schedules tend to produce a marginally lower APR-equivalent than daily schedules over an identical term, because the lender's capital is outstanding slightly longer on average. The difference is usually modest, a few percentage points of APR, but it is not zero and it should not be assumed away when comparing two offers with the same factor rate.

Where It Is Genuinely Expensive

This product is not competitive with bank term loans, SBA loans, or most equipment finance agreements on cost. Businesses using it to fund a full equipment purchase, rather than a short-term gap or repair, are typically paying an APR-equivalent several multiples higher than a bank rate for the same capital. Because remittance is daily or weekly regardless of the borrower's actual cash flow pattern, seasonal or project-based equipment operators (paving crews, harvest equipment, event rental fleets) can face debits during slow weeks that do not match revenue timing, which is a real operational strain distinct from the headline APR.

Stacking is another cost trap specific to this category. Because approval is fast and underwriting is lenient on collateral, some equipment-heavy borrowers take a second or third short-term advance while an existing one is still outstanding. Each additional position is priced against a smaller net cash flow cushion, and combined daily debits from multiple lenders can exceed what the operating account can sustain, independent of the individual APR-equivalent of any single advance.

Where It Can Fit

The legitimate use case is narrow but real: a defined, short-duration cash gap with a clear payoff event. Examples include bridging 30 to 60 days between an equipment repair invoice and an insurance reimbursement, covering parts and rental costs on a job with a contractually certain payment date, or financing a repair that keeps a revenue-generating machine running while a lower-cost equipment loan or line of credit is arranged in parallel.

In these scenarios, the speed of funding and the absence of collateral requirements can offset the higher APR-equivalent, provided the business has modeled the actual dollar cost, not just the factor rate, against the value of avoided downtime or a missed contract deadline.

  • Does remittance frequency (daily vs weekly) match the business's actual receivables timing?
  • Is there a prepayment discount, and does the lender reduce the total factor cost for early payoff, or is the full amount fixed regardless of speed?
  • Is this financing a bridge to a lower-cost instrument, such as an equipment loan or bank line, or is it functioning as the primary source of equipment capital?

For equipment-heavy operations, short-term online working capital loans are best understood as a liquidity tool for defined, short-horizon gaps rather than a substitute for equipment-specific financing. The APR-equivalent math generally makes more sense the closer the actual use case is to "bridge" and the further it is from "purchase."
