Balloon payment

A large lump sum due at the maturity of a loan that has not fully amortised.

Common in conventional commercial real estate lending, where a loan may amortise over 25 years but mature in five, forcing a refinance at whatever rates exist then.

SBA loans are generally fully amortising with no balloon, which is one of the programme's real advantages.
